So today was really one out of the bag for me.........I lost my job!

The company I worked for went into liquidation as of yesterday, we were all summoned into a meeting this morning and sacked on the spot, told to leave all our gear and make our own way home. The only good thing, if you can call it that, is that they have guaranteed all our entitlements. Unfortunately we won't see anything for around 12 weeks. We didn't get paid for the last week and we've lost the last 2 months of super as it hasn't been paid.
I started ringing around my contacts and spreading the word that I was out of work, so that hopefully something will come up soonish.
This is all new to me as I've been employed full time since I was 16 and I'm about to turn 46 so looking for a new job will be a new experience as I've never had to look before, I've always been approached.
Oh well when one door closes another one opens, so I'm keeping positive.

So there you go, something different

That's a pretty hard hit to take, mate - I really feel for you. I can empathize with being sacked - so far, I've been sacked from every single job I've ever held. Well, except for my most recent few roles, which have all been project-based contracts.

What kind of work do you do, mate? Message me a few details, and I'll put out some feelers to expand your reach a bit.

Geez - hard knock to take mate. :(

Although my contacts are somewhat limited to the DoD organisation (and hangers on), please get in touch if you think that I can be of assistance from here.

Gee Tony - that bites the big one!
I've been part of liquidated companies 3 times! It SUCKS! keep a VERY close eye on them - if anything starts to smell get straight on to it. Keep records of every date etc. Worst comes to worst contact the government guarantee for entitlements (GEERS). They've paid me out twice!
They don't guarantee super though
Last time I lost a job I went to unlock the back door of the factory and was suprised to see a locksmith pop out accompanied by the estate agent...
Shoot me a copy of your CV once you get it sorted and I'll see if I can help.

Shocking news Tony. Good luck with the job hunt. Unfortunately unless you want to turn to my line of work I can't offer much more than moral support.

Ouch! That really sucks.

I'm going through a lot of crap at work myself at the moment thanks to a major restructure (which is killing a 160 year old organisation), but the one benefit of working for the government is that they can't just sack you (without an attempt at redeployment, further training and offering a package). They can, however, change your job so much that it is unrecognisable and therefore make you quit. A fair bit of that going on at the moment... :x

I hope something turns up for you soon. Usually when these things hit people suddenly they end up in a new job that they like more than the old one. Sort of gives you that kick to find something better. Hopefully that will be the case for you.

...of course that doesn't get you through the awkward time in between. :? Best of luck...

Sorry to hear that Tony, that's just so gutting.... :(

If there's anything I can do to help (I have no idea what), please let me know.

Andrew

Indeed, sorry to hear.

Maybe think about opening your own business. No idea what line of work you are into ... just food for thought.

Sounds rough, Tony! Must have been a tough one for you, and all your fellow employees...what a shock!

Hope things work out for you, with the entitlements and so on. Best of luck with all of that.

And best of luck finding some new work, of course! I like your positive attitude of 'new experiences' - sometimes a shake-up of one's comfortable world can end up being a good thing.

I know its too late now, but I guess if you get the slightest hint of the work place going down soon, you could get income protection insurance before it happens. Best of luck finding the next job.

Does anyone here use income protection insurance?

I used to have income insurance when I was self employed. I don't bother now I'm working for 'the man'.
It's a bit pricey IIRC. I also don't have any dependents (apart from "The Minister for Beer & Fun") and my Mortgage is in a good place so it's not so important.

Yes, I do. Only issue with a lot of policies is that they pay out only after a fixed period of no work - in my case, it's 6 months, but the it guarantees 75% of my last pay scale out to a whole year, which is pretty good.

Hope you get your entitlement and a new job turns up soon

Only time my company went insolvent it had arranged for the business to be bought out so I got to sit in the same seat for more pay ... ... ....

Thanks for all the kind words guys, very much appreciated.
We have income protection, and we'll apply for it as soon as I get my letter of seperation from the liquidators, but a friend mentioned the other day that income insurance doesn't cover you for your company going broke, so we'll have to wait and see.
I've had a couple of calls over the last 48 hours letting me know people can give me temp work for a while which will help greatly. I honestly don't know what I want to do. I've been a projects supervisor for the last 13 years, but it feels like time for a change, but to what I don't know. Anyway I've got some thinking time so I'm not worried right now. :D

At least your skills would seem easily transferrable :D I imagine a good project manager is sought after in many industries.
