I found a link this very interesting sale today. Its a miniature that is for sale on etsy.com for the mere price of $2,400usd! I know that miniatures have gone for this price probably before, but to me it just seems like a very elaborate conversion of GW 40k bits and an average paintjob at best. Definitely not worth the price for what you are getting, no matter how unique it is!

I would love to hear your thoughts on the miniature and absurd price. :P

I think its a fantastic piece of conversion work, I really do, but yes the price is ridiculous. Saying that I guess he's trying to recover cost per labour which is fine if someone is willing to pay that amount, and I'm sure someone out there would, but my question is this. if it's been featured in GW promotional material was he commisioned to build it?

$2400 is an insane amount to spend on a piece of plastic, no matter how original it is. Even I draw the limit way earlier than that!

2 reasons my opinion may not be worth that much:

1. I don't like this miniature at all and wouldn't pay $24 for it, let alone $2400
2. I'm about to blow more than $7k on Jet A-1, bad food, uncomfortable seats and no sleep (for 2), so what do I know about value for money?

I like the locomotive but where is the rest of the train? Reminds me of this

Still it's a crazy price, but value is in the eye (and wallet) of the beholder with art (and crafts)

Just checked the link.....um guys...it has been marked as sold! Does that mean somebody actually bought it at that price?

yes. yes it does.

If you ever wanted to sell anything at a ridiculous price etsy is the place. They seem to have collected a bunch of cashed up collectors/hobbyists/philanthropists that support and buy from each other. Which is good for the community there. Also this could have been an art piece that had alot of meaning and significance to someone, not like us who see it as a conversion/scratch build with average painting. Also probably why it never showed on ebay, as the market there is much lower for that kind of item.

Interesting though. It shows the lister knew what they were doing when they listed at that price. Im impressed... even though I think the attempt as an attractive piece of miniature work is a failure.

like anything, it's only worth what someone is prepared to pay - if he got it, it was worth it to the person who bought it.

To me, this guy may have sold as a piece of art, rather than an elaborate miniature conversion, in which case the price is not absurd. You only have to look at the work of Kris Kuksi to see that there is money to be made from such pieces of work and his stuff goes for more than that...

Good on him - it should give hope to the rest of us!

I guess that's my problem, I don't see this as art. We've had these discussions before (are minis art). I think they can be if they meet certain criteria. This, at least for me, fails to meet any of those criteria. But hey, there is a lot of stuff sold every day as art that fails many of my criteria. Some of it is hanging in the world's galleries, so who am I to judge?

Like you said though, it was obviously worth that much to someone. Good for them.

I'm just jealous that I'm not in on the scam.

I suppose the main reason was because of the GW books it was in... Still, I wouldn't think anything over a grand.

I'll accept that.
