I appreciate this may be a bit far to travel for a social painting get together for most of you
But if you are in the U.K. at the time, or like me happen to actually live there . . . . .

The Basement’s FigureWorld 2012

Yes, it’s on again – Same place, same time of year, same people running it.

So, not that we’re blowing our own trumpet too much, but it’s going to be brilliant…….Just like it was in previous years !

We’re already beginning to organise this, and just so you can pencil the date into your diary, it’s going to be on Saturday the 7th of July 2012 at Oundle School, Oundle, Near Peterborough. PE8 4GH.

Times for the show will be the same as last year – 9:30am until 16:30pm.

Some things never change though – a good amount of free parking, refreshments, traders and displays of models, no competition to worry about and simply loads of figure modellers to chat about your favourite hobby with.

So there you go, early warning and “Reason Number One” for returning to FigureWorld in 2012 – The Basement Team are doing their very best to make it just as enjoyable as it was in 2011 !

Oh, Reason One-and-a-half……Maybe you didn’t attend in 2011…….Then all the more reason for making sure you get there in 2012 – see, here at TB, we’re just thinking of you !

regardless of you guys getting over to the UK for this, I have to say that I've loved the last 2 of these.....

why? I was relaxed.....just enjoyed the chat and the superb models....mid way through the day I realised I wasn't stressed because there was no competition! A pleasant revelation

Just to confirm we are planning stuff for the Sunday as well ... ... ...

The Basement’s FigureWorld 2012

“Paintathon” – (def ) – Completely new, made up word to describe a large group of figure modellers getting brushes wet in order to apply paint to model figures.

Oh O.K, we made the word up; but it still means that we’re adding another day to FigureWorld to make it a weekend kind of thing.

That means that on Sunday the 8th July 2012, the Oundle school will reopen it’s Great Hall to allow any figure modellers access so that they can come in and paint, chat or generally sit around to enjoy their hobby as a part of a large group.

We don’t get together nearly as often as we should, and so if you’re going to travel all the way to Oundle, and even though the show on the Saturday is good enough reason to attend, why not make a weekend of it ?

The show is still being held on Saturday the 7th of July 2012 at Oundle School, Oundle, Near Peterborough. PE8 4GH.

Opening times for the Saturday will be 9:30am until 16:30pm.
On the Sunday it’ll be 9:30am until 14:30pm

So there you go, “Reason Number Two” for returning to FigureWorld in 2012 – Buy it on the Saturday, slap some paint on it on the Sunday !

Here's some news about the traders

Quote:
The Basement’s FigureWorld 2012

The Traders.

We asked, they replied, you can do a little shopping !

It’s early in the year, but maybe you do need to save up for that shopping list you’re compiling for FigureWorld, so getting early warning of who’s going to be trading there might be handy.

Last year we had twenty one, yes, twenty one different traders, selling anything from airbrushes and compressors, to bases and books……and one or two selling figures too.

We tried to get in as much variety as possible, and that’s what we’re going to try and do again this year. So far, traders who have booked tables are:-

Avid Reader – Vast range of historical reference books plus a good stock of “how to” books linked to modelling.
SK Miniatures – Figure model producers and agents for over fifty different figure companies.
Name It – Specialists in producing professional nameplates for model plinths.
Progressive Engineering – Producers of logical paint storage racks, painting stations etc.
El Greco Miniatures – Figure Model producers and agents for over fifty different figure companies.
Oakwood Studios – high quality wood bases
JoeK Minis – Range of 30mm resin figures.
Reedees Miniatures – producers of weapon sets, figures and busts.
Mil-Mart – Well known for a broad range of flat figures and busts.
The Base 2B – Bespoke wood plinths.
Friendship models – Own range of “Wee Friends” plus a wide range of plastic and resin figures of various scales.
Model Display Productions – Small scale scenic bases, resin plinths, diorama accessories, the expanded range of Steve Buddle 54mm female figures plus an emerging range of busts.
Studio McVey – 30mm fantasy range of figures plus their own games system in which to use them.
Little Cars – Paints, airbrushes and compressors, tools, in fact anything you could possibly need to help you put models together, not to mention lenses, wire and tube.
The Basement – An ever-growing range of high quality busts.
Void Models – From 30mm scale fantasy figures to 1/8th scale resin garage kits, an expanding range of fantasy and sci-fi models.
Carole Peart – Acrylic portrait painter taking commissions.

That’s 17 different traders so far. Of course, there’s going to be a few more traders adding their names to this list – this is just to whet your appetite and maybe start you saving those pennies.

The show is still being held on Saturday the 7th of July 2012 at Oundle School, Oundle, Near Peterborough. PE8 4GH.

Opening times for the Saturday will be 9:30am until 16:30pm.
And don’t forget the Paintathon on the Sunday: - 9:30am until 14:30pm

So there you go, “Reason Number Three” for returning to FigureWorld in 2012 - Because you know you’re worth it !

And a quick word about the main purpose of Figure World
The displays ....

Quote:
The Displays

Let’s face it, these are the stars of the show, the whole reason FigureWorld began !

No competition, no pressure, no judging gaffes; just lots of space to display your models and be able to discuss them and other people’s work with……well…. Other people.

The Basement’s whole idea behind FigureWorld is to get modellers together and talking. To see what each of us does, to talk about why we do it and how we do it, and perhaps to give each other ideas about new projects or types of figure we’d like to tackle in the future.

Struggling with that latest project ?

Can’t quite get the effect you want ?

Just plain difficult to find the motivation to paint ?

All good reasons to chat to people who do what you do – they’ve probably been there before and very probably have a good solution for it.

Obviously we’re contacting the same clubs and forums as last year to support the display area:-

The White Rose Society.
The British Model Soldier Society.
The British Flat Figure Society.
Wamp Forum.
Platoon Brittanica.

And The Basement will invite it’s own members to put on a display as well.

However, just like last year, if you’re not in any of the above, it doesn’t matter. You’re still invited to come along and put on a display of figures, that’s what it’s all about.

If you’re a club that’s not been mentioned above, but would like to have space allocated for a figure display, then please contact Robert Lane at roblane@tbforum.co.uk

But as mentioned, if you’re not in any of those clubs you’re still VERY welcome to come along and put on a display of figure models, and it’s very important to us that you know there’ll be space for you.

So there you go, “Reason Number Four” for returning to FigureWorld in 2012 – Not only are you worth it, your models are too !

The Social side

O.K. we mentioned the displays last time, and we’ve told you about the Paintathon too, but what about night time if you’re staying over for the weekend.

Want to talk to the Basement Team ?

Or just want to chat with other figure modellers there to attend the show ?

During the day of the show and the Paintathon, the refreshments room will be open next to the Great Hall in Oundle School.

In the evening there’s one of two pubs to be in, both in Oundle, and both close together. One is The Ship Inn, and the other is The Talbot. Both serve good food and even better beer, and after 8pm, you’ll probably find one or two modellers ( O.K. probably more than one or two modellers actually ) in either one of those establishments….or both, on the Friday and Saturday nights – 6th and 7th July respectively.

So there you go, “Reason Number Five” for returning to FigureWorld in 2012 – Beer and food – can’t paint with ‘em, but can’t live without ‘em.

And some of what we hope the event is all about

Quote:
The Basement’s FigureWorld 2012

The knowledge

It’s what we all want, but it can’t be bought – knowledge.

Simply put, there were approximately 200 people at FigureWorld last year, one or two with fifty years or more in the hobby, some with as little as one or two years or less.

If you average it out at 10 years of modelling experience per person though, that’s two thousand years of knowledge ( O.K. some might say you could get that amount from Rob Lane alone ).

Somewhere in there, there’s got to be that little fact, that small piece of something that you can’t quite figure out, that could be solved for you simply by talking to someone.

Because that’s what FigureWorld is all about – getting modellers together, discussing projects and model related problems, and hopefully using that vast store of knowledge to help each other get the finish we hope for on the latest model.

It’s all very well seeing photographs on the ‘net” or via e-mail, but actually holding a piece and being able to turn it around and see properly the effects that have been rendered, or alternatively be able to describe a problem to someone verbally rather than long-winded text based conversations; well, you just can’t beat being with other modellers in real time in the flesh.

Better still, on the Sunday, there’s the Paintathon where people can actually show you how things are done, or you can show them exactly how you produce what you’ve done.

So there you go, “Reason Number Six” for returning to FigureWorld in 2012 - because two hundred ( or more ) minds are better than one.

The show is being held on Saturday the 7th of July 2012 at Oundle School, Oundle, Near Peterborough. PE8 4GH.

Opening times for the Saturday will be 9:30am until 16:30pm.
And don’t forget the Paintathon on the Sunday: - 9:30am until 14:30pm

And if you needed even more encoragment

Quote:

All

The Ideas

They say that there’s nothing new under the sun; that in fact there are only seven themes that can be used to tell a story; and that if you’re really, really good, then Father Christmas will bring you some presents towards the end of December…….

If there’s nothing new under the sun, then you’ll be able to see everything there is to see regarding figure models at FigureWorld.

If there’s only seven themes to tell a story, then those themes will be in model form at FigureWorld and you’ll be able to get ideas from them.

And if you’ve been really, really good so far this year, then why wait ‘til December ? The traders are in Oundle for the show, and they’ve got everything you could possibly need to reward you for all that good behaviour.

O.K. the last point has nothing to do with ideas as such; but how are you going to flesh out the latest idea you’ve been inspired to create, unless you come to the show and buy it ?

So there you go, “Reason Number Seven” for returning to FigureWorld in 2012 - because you’ve behaved yourself…….And you’ve thought of something new to make, or will have done by ( or possibly before ) the end of the show.

The show is being held on Saturday the 7th of July 2012 at Oundle School, Oundle, Near Peterborough. PE8 4GH.

Opening times for the Saturday will be 9:30am until 16:30pm.

plenty of vendors to buy the things to paint

Quote:
There’s even more traders !

Added to the list of traders we announced in “Reason 3” there will also be the following traders attending.

Progressive Engineering – A range of useful laser cut holders, paint stations etc, with the option of bringing your own designs to discuss with Jon.
Basecrafts – Basing materials to put the finishing touches to the groundwork on your model bases.
Mitch’s Military Models – 75mm and 120mm resin figures with a focus on British Napoleonic subjects, with a group of British Arnhem figures being released soon.
CGS Military figures – A new range of figures backed by a selection of figures and busts from ranges that we though might never be seen again – including a welcome return of the D.F. Grieve range.
Pete Watson Bases – a selection of plinths in a variety of woods for your models at competitive prices.
Firefly Miniatures – A range of military figures in 1/35th scale and 54mm, plus groundwork settings ( remember those Darius ready made “wedgie” sections of WWII vehicles ). Other companies carried are BlackDog models, Alvic miniatures and of course the well known Tommy’s War range.

Add these to the seventeen traders mentioned in “Reason 3” and you’ll definitely find something to tempt you at FigureWorld this year. And just to save you looking, I’ve put a list of all those traders from Reason 3 at the bottom of this text.

So, “Reason 8” – Not only are you worth it, but the traders are too – they’re pulling out all the stops to bring you the very best kits and accessories at the very best prices. Can you afford not to come to the show and browse through their wares ?

Mil-Mart Miniatures – Well known for a broad range of flat figures and busts.
The Base 2B – Bespoke wood plinths.
Friendship models – Own range of “Wee Friends” plus a wide range of plastic and resin figures of various scales.
Model Display Productions – Small scale scenic bases, resin plinths, diorama accessories, the expanded range of Steve Buddle 54mm female figures plus an emerging range of busts.
Studio McVey – 30mm fantasy range of figures plus their own games system – Sedition Wars - in which to use them.
Little Cars – Paints, airbrushes and compressors, tools, in fact anything you could possibly need to help you put models together, not to mention lenses, wire and tube.
The Basement – An ever-expandint range of high quality busts.

Reason Number 9

Quote:
The photos

With phones and cameras being so easy to use these days, taking pictures of models is almost foolproof ( Don’t tell Adrian, he’s not quite there yet ).

Taking shots of other people’s models is a way of compiling and storing a wealth of information that you can’t possibly hold in memory alone, and being able to refer back to any given model is more than helpful if you’re after recreating an effect or idea within your own pieces.

Taking photos of models is commonly seen at model shows these days, and FigureWorld is no different in encouraging the use of cameras to capture models for people to look at later.

And bearing in mind that some of the country’s best painters and sculptors will be at the show with their latest work, not to mention the new releases from various companies; there’s a lot of potential photographs you can take.

Obviously we ask that you take care not to cause damage when doing this, but it is an excellent chance when there’s over 600 models on show, to take pictures of the ones you like.

So there you go, “Reason Number Nine” for returning to FigureWorld in 2012 - because there’s a lot of cool stuff to photograph.
