So here we go with the first challenge, everyone! Hopefully we have a few people join in, and everyone has fun!

Painting Red*
Paint any model, but have a reasonably obvious area painted the colour red.
Inspiration: http://www.puttyandpaint.com/explore/colors/red

An explanation of the OzPainters Challenges can be found here: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=5369

Pictures of completed models and any description you want to add to them should be added to this thread by 20/7/2015.

*Seriously, this was obvious from the original description, right?

Sorry Nick, if this is covered somewhere... but does it need to be a new mini or just something that fits that theme? Like do you need to post an unpainted pic of the mini in WIP or some such, before you present the finished ones? or can it be an old mini that you have previously painted, but fits the theme?

EDIT: Wait..... nevermind  I found it.

Well I've started my miniature for the challenge.

He's a Rohan axe man from the GW LoTR range, not sure if he is still available as I bought it years ago. Only conversion is the feet which were too small in the original sculpt in my opinion.

The cloak is the central red element and the skintones and leathers will be worked up from a red/brown base to bring the colour tone together.

I've still got some layers to go on the cloak but it's heading where I want it to.

Quiet, Jay! If we watch, we might all learn how to not procrastinate!

I rather like that LOTR mini!
The red is looking cool - is it a rusty red or is that just the photo?

I'm going for a brownish/rusty red to keep the natural earth tones presents as I can't imagine viking types had access to modern bright red dyes. I've worked it up from a mephistion red/scortched brown base. I want to bring it up a few degrees with some glazes.

There was a red dye called Rose Madder, been around since ancient times, mostly Asia and Egypt. Same dye that made the Red Coats later in history. They still make tubes of the artist's colour.

As a dye it fades really quickly, improvements were made in 1826. But it is a natural dye and was less bright red and more earth red.

Just my two cents. I just thought of it cause it's a natural red that isn't too chromatic. And it fits in as a natural aspect of the Middle Earth setting.
