Sculpting a big winged boar: WIP thread.

Hi all,
I am just starting work on a sculpt of a winged boar. It is a commission for some F111 Airforce guys, the winged razorback is their mascot. It will be around around 8cm long, and sculpted in the semi realistic style you might see in a wargaming war boar sculpt. I have decided to work in super sculpey so I can easily alter it as I go. The finished piece will be cast in resin.
I started by spending time with the client researching various reference pics. Then, based on his preferences sketched a couple of rough concept drawings. He has chosen the one in the standing/about to charge pose. (second sketch)

I have only just started sculpting. The first pic is a practice at some sculpey shaggy fur. The second is the armature. I find it best to start with a accurately proportioned base, then add exaggeration, etc, to the sculpt as I go. The armature you see here is not yet posed.

I’ll be adding more pics as this project progresses.
Any comments or feedback are welcome.

No particular scale. But about to 8cm long. Not sure what that works out to.
I'll get back from holiday on the 28th and hopefully get it moving along then.

Thanks for the replies and encouragement.
I had a little bit of time today and worked on posing and bulking out the armature with 'Apoxie Sculpt'. It still doesn't look like much, sort of a chunky skeleton at this stage. The next step will be to start adding Sculpey.

Great progress even at this early stages Vic, some interesting work you've done there.
How will you be attaching the wings to the main body? I'm assuming you'll have some large pins coming from the wings to insert into the main body?
The initial feather effects you started at the beginning there, is that like a layering effect where you do one line of feathers then lay more clay over the top of the first layer, sculp it, then lay more layers on as you progress?

Thanks Gonzoangel. Yes, I think I'll sculpt most of the boar before adding the wings, probably using pins.
And, yes, you are spot on, its a layering effect as you describe.

Looking very nice so far.
Oddly I actually kinda like him at this stage. There is a lot to be said for the life and dynamics of an unfinished sculpt - they kind of have a real energy at this stage I think.
I llok forward to the fur part of this project - that always gives me grief... :roll:

Thanks for the interest, the first stage of sculpy is added. I'm calling it the baldy, blobby stage. Very basic shape is blocked in ready to begin detailing.
I'm a bit worried about my ability to finish sculpting this unbaked without sticking my fingers in some detail that took 4 hours to sculpt (you know how it is :roll:

). I guess I'll just have to be very careful.
Any tips for working with polymer clay without stuffing it up before you bake it?

try glueing your fingers to the block with something easily dissolvable, hell you could even try a little superglue but i wouldn't reckoment it... that way you have a reminder ( a very firm one if you use superglue) to keep your hand on the block and off the mini :mrgreen:

I find this suggestion totally ridiculous!!
With your fingers glued to the base you have limited mobility in being able to turn the project to work on.

This boar is really coming to life now Vic, looking excellent, you've really got the anatomy down pat.
Is this going to be cast at any stage or is it just a one off?

Like the idea abd the nmini is coming along very well.

having worked in and around F111s for 18 years I would be interested in getting a momento of them. Will this mini be up for general sale or is it just for the Client you speak of.
