hey guys while procrastinating over my open entry i set up wy photo studio and took some snaps of my unit.
last year i entered a unit of 20 plague monks into unit which didn't place in finals. i hoped if i did a smooth paint job on that many robes it would get me extra kudos but after speaking with laurie abuot how to improove this unit he said that other than my front rank all other 15 models pretty much looked the same.
so i decided my entry this year would be individuals that make up a unit.i also wanted to try a few concepts that would make them stand out from other entries
i chose a mithril silver base coat (at work i was filleting a dozen atlantic salmon)
i positioned them so the unit is being viewed from the side (skinks have a nice profile)
when basing them i raised the back rank to give a good view of the back rank
i also used a clear resin to represent their aquatic abilites (i 80% like it)
there is a representative from each major animal class (mammal, reptile , amphibian, fish, bird, insect)

Wow! I really really like the overall effect of the unit. They look amaizing! Love the individualness and variation in each model and I also like the water bases. Maybe next time with the water you could start at the top of the edge of the base instead of the bottom. I also think the layers on the scales at the back could be smoother, even though the unit is to such a high standard I think you could go over some of the scales to get them all really neat. I think it would make the unit cleaner when they go under close inspection even though you are probably sick of painting them.

Ooooh, nice. Love the concept, mithril silver base is interesting, give that scaley look. I think the water looks great, pics are a little small, can't wait to see these.
My only comment for improvement is to try for even smoother layering/blends and maybe push the highlights (or shadows) a bit more in places, the red on the crests for example looks a little flat.

Automaton: those painted pics on the (Heroquest) box were awesome! I looked at them as virtually an unattainable goal in painting, haha...

great idea, love the water bases...so how much of a pain was that to do? I love all the animals and insects that you worked into each piece. That frog is just waty too relaxed for his own good...he might soon be dinner.

Great stuff, you've really nailed the water bases.

Judging by the squad entry's in the other GD this year, I'd say that this has a very good chance of walking away with gold, good luck.

yeah the water bases were a real pain some look good, others s#@% house. i had to make individual retainers out of icecream container and blue tac. then inject with a 3ml syringe the resin (you can feel rather embarrased when asking a chemist for syringes when not a drug addict.... honest )

i wish i knew about the resin Kyle used for his bases since i added catylist to the resin but so it wouldn't run through gaps it had to be a bit thicker. kyles one looks way easier.

Ralph are you serious? your water is way better then mine! at least you got hard edges on your, my one leaked everywhere and had a giant lip on it.

I have sort of got the hang of the resin now, and feel like I should try some more ambitious projects with it. but your water bases are amazing!

The water bases look terrific, but the painting also makes them stand out as well. Terrific work. I've got the same looks as well when buying syringes. I think the key to buying them is not to start giggling if they ask you what they are for

They look terrific, but i'm sure they look even better in real life.

I like the original take on the skin by using a mettalic paint to represent the sheen = very tricksy

I do like the bases, however I think the effect would be better if they were ranked up and in one solid block, with a 'water' movement tray.

oh yeah the lip is from resin creep as it cures i did it in 2 layers and then had to top up some holes with more. then i gave the sides a bit of water effects to make it transparent again cheers for the kind words.
like trevor correctly pointed out they aren't that smooth (pre GW washes) as far as painting goes. but on the silver bits i only used 4 colours scorched brown on the back around the scales, catachan green, bubonic brown and bestial brown.just in thinned out multiple layers.

they are awesome, very glad i'm not entering that category. each model tells a little story. they have a fantastic slimy shiny look to them, very lifelike.

The silver base coat is a very neat idea. I'd not have considered that. It's a great looking unit!

I really think the water bases and skinks look great. :D If you are at GD I really need to speak to you about the best types of resin etc if that is at all possible.
