Well I'm back from Sydney and finally able to take some photos of my entry for GD 07 40K Squad. I wanted to do a unit that I can also use in a game of 40K, so as well as doing a full ten marine squad, I also converted the marines up so they could be identifiable and used as 5 marine squads. I've got one 5 marine squad assaulting a position (Including grenades being thrown) and the other squad giving covering fire.

I'm not really happy with the Ultramarine colour straight from the pot, so I added a little black to it so the Ultramarine blue was more subdued.

Simon

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Absolutely fantastic job Simon and a truly deserving gold place. The details you put into all your models are something only someone like myself can dream of, and every piece of guidance you give me is truly appreciated.

By the way, how's the progress on the Rhino going? I hope it'll get done before I nick off to Japan!

Congratulations again mate, a job truly well done :)

Excellent stuff. Love the 'new' ultramarine colour - it looks really good.
The dude lobbing the grenade is a classic. Top effort!

It was good to meet you Simon and congrats on winning in what I thought was one of the toughest categories this year. My favorite is the marine who is reloading his bolter but they are all dynamic and really well painted.

Great work simon, it was nice meeting you! Really good work on this squad, I heard so many people admiring it on the day :D Very very neat and clear painting, and a nice tasteful blue colour haha. Just remember those things I told you about the contrast, and you'll be even better next year!

My favourite is the grenade guy I think - although like luke, I also love the guy changing the ammo clip.

Thanks for the comments.

When I saw the quality of the units that had been entered into the 40K squad catergory, it could have been any number of the entries that took a demon let alone a gold one.

I did really enjoy modelling and painting the squad. The marine throwing the grenade and the one reloading were the first two I finished for the squad as I had a strong image in my head on what I wanted for these two miniatures.

That blue colour is class :D Much better than smurf marines!

I would just suggest that you up the contrast a few more notches, to make them really stand out.

Congrats on the demon though :D

I know its a cliche, but the pics really don't do them justice, the contrast is spot on IRL. They are a rather subtle unit though, they didn't jump out the cabinet and scream "Look at me", but when you took the time to look at them they were very good.

Automaton: those painted pics on the (Heroquest) box were awesome! I looked at them as virtually an unattainable goal in painting, haha...

Agreed, Trevor. Very unassuming until you studied them - then you really appreciate the effort!

Such an incredibly solid entry. There were so many units that made the simple mistake of being a bunch of well painted minis. The difference here is the sheer cohesiveness of the squad. Very characterful and dynamic.

And love that blue :D
