Morsi from Chest of Colours has put together a great tutorial on painting faces.

Chest of Colours Tutorial

It's extremely thorough and discusses use of differing palettes and adding depth and volume using warm and cold tones.

Gotta love their tutorials. :)

When I skimmed this I was amazed at how good the computer-painted images actually looked.
Makes me wonder about all those minis ive seen on cmon that've made me think, "gee that almost looks like it was retouched with a computer". I would always dismiss it, thinking noone could retouch a mini with PS and have it still look as though it was painted.

From the Femme Militant website I came across Tears of Envy, a graphic design company that also does Digital Painting. If you click on Metal and then click on Digital Paint, you can see some examples and an explaination.

Or a quick example...

Holy crap. I wouldn't have known those were digitally painted had you not pointed it out. I wonder if there are any on cmon that are 8)

Geez... I hope not Zordana.
Still put an element of competitiveness in and anything is possible :(
I suppose from the manufacturer's POV it'd be handy but I'd be suprised if it's much cheaper than paying a painter and in Rack or GW's case they'd not have painted models to use in their magazine articles.

True. I don't actually recall ever thinking that of any of the Rackham official paintjobs though. They tend to look painted, albeit brilliantly so.
Just a few randoms I've come across on cmon that look either too good to be true in spots or they look a tiny bit blurry, like my eyes cant focus on sections of the model properly.

One comes to mind, it was an official job for a small mini company that was very 'firey'. I won't name it because I could be wrong, but I remember wondering about some of the hotter highlights.

It's the addition of light that can make a real difference.
Your average mini doesn't glow from the inside like a computer screen
I find it a real issue in my work as a Graphic designer (paper doesn't glow either...)
