My 2 cents...
Disclaimer: I only saw entries from a couple of feet away through glass under harsh lighting, we all know how important light is...
As usual there were lots of great minis, but I would agree that there seemed to be less 'wow' entries, although there were some notable exceptions (eg a very nice harlequin squad entry). The judging seemed to lean towards more stock minis, and in some cases 'eavy metal' style painting. To me it seems that GW imagery/flavour is even more important than it has been, dare I say it over painting technique (but then it's always been a bit like that).
James Travers from here in Norwich did the handgunner/skeleton duel, solid painting with spot on imagery/atmosphere, a deserved win. Conrad got a couple of pins, from 2 very nice entries, he is now 15 pins from 15 entries! It has to only be a matter of time before he finally gets a demon.
A necron army won armies on parade, we were stood in the queue with the painter and got to see the base, which was very nice; even then, not seeing any other entries, we thought it would be a contender. This was interesting, because everyone could vote if they wished, but you could only get to within about 5 foot of the entries at best, so definitely mostly about impact at distance...
In open, Steve Buddles corpse cart was great, but I disliked the base for the elf and I think the snowy graveyard suffered in the harsh cabinet vlight, it looks better in the pics. For me open was the most disapointing, it seems to be a category for the design studio now. I want to be blown away and I wasn't, both Martin and Mike have done better entries in the past.
Alan merret all but said that the sword winner got the sword for having 4 (I think) golds, my pick for sword was his demonette, but its been done before. I think his entries had a subtlety that was lost in the harsh light of the cabinet, be interested to see better pics.

Automaton: those painted pics on the (Heroquest) box were awesome! I looked at them as virtually an unattainable goal in painting, haha...
