I only just realised that the GW website is doing the same thing as last year and having somewhat live updates of entries for the UK GD. Check them out here. (Its does say 2010, but clearly it isnt...)

http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/article.jsp?catId=&categoryId=&section=&pIndex=0&aId=18400001a&start=1&multiPageMode=true

and clearly someone was quick to jump on the DreadFleet bandwagon:

I hate photos on the GW website...

Show you a nice closeup thumbnail, then when you try to enlarge it, the picture is even smaller!

Looks to be some nice stuff over there, the duel with the handgunner is pretty good.

Yeah I know, the picture system is silly!

No real super stand out entries there yet. I mean last year. they put up the Slayer Sword winner pretty early on in the day. I like that Handgunner vs Skelly duel and the DE Sorceress vs HE Mage duel. Oh and the Corpse Cart with the undead bull in Open is cool also.

Yipp that's the one Kyle :) I'm pretty sure he won four golds as well as winning the sword if i'm not mistaken.

Is that guy drooling as he reads his book on the ground??

The paintjob looks really super-crisp, like straight out of an Eavy Metal showcase.

Look, I don't want to take anything away from the winner, but don't you think its a little boring for a SlayerSword winner? Its just a stock standard mini on a standard gaming base. It is nicely done. But I feel that perhaps it is not as amazing as most of Sword winners we have seen this year, or even previous years UK winners.... anyways just my thoughts.. :? I look at it, and I am not inspired or in awe of the miniature, to me, it is just a miniature. I feel that a Slayer Sword winner needs to be at least something that nobody has ever seen before, having some 'wow' factor to it. A lot of the Slayer winners this year have had stock standard minis a part of them, but the entries was still super amazing. What I am trying to say is that this mini doesn't inspire me to pick up my paintbrushes.

Have to agree with you Kyle.. if that's the winner, then I'm feeling fairly underwhelmed (unless there is something so mind bogglingly incredible on the back, which we have yet to see)
:?

I have to admit, I didn't see this year's sword winner in person, but it's also fair to say I didn't see a piece this year that made me stand up and take notice, as I have in the past with pieces like the Clockmaker (I literally turned to my mate and said 'Sword winner' when I saw that one). Having said that, it could be that the World Expo spoiled me for that sort of thing...

Regardless, it was a good competition, and I'm pretty sure numbers were up on last year. Nabbed finalist pins for both my entries (40K Urien Rakarth and a WH Banshee), so I walked away quietly pleased.

Also, if Conrad doesn't post pictures of his wraith, you all have to harass him until he does - the freehand runes and sigils all over the back are awesome!

I think even from the small amount of pics I have seen there are a few miniatures that have way more 'wow' factor then the Necromancer. Adrian Bay always does some nice stuff. That Nurgle Ogre based on that new OK character looks pretty cool. I guess they just didnt impress the judges?

Out of interest was the Banshee/Dieguete diorama actually disqualified or just looked over for a placing?

didn't see too many 'wow' entries from that link; but then the pic's were tiny, so it's hard to tell. That said, the sword winner is definately a bit underwhelming from previous years gone by.

maybe it's got 3D illustrations on the pages of the book he's reading!? :)

@Kyle. Banshees entry was actually dq'd for being a joint entry. I agree about the sword winner though, comparing that to last years sword entry it's quite a difference. The eavy metal style painted miniatures seems to be the new focus.

My 2 cents...

Disclaimer: I only saw entries from a couple of feet away through glass under harsh lighting, we all know how important light is...

As usual there were lots of great minis, but I would agree that there seemed to be less 'wow' entries, although there were some notable exceptions (eg a very nice harlequin squad entry).
The judging seemed to lean towards more stock minis, and in some cases 'eavy metal' style painting. To me it seems that GW imagery/flavour is even more important than it has been, dare I say it over painting technique (but then it's always been a bit like that).

James Travers from here in Norwich did the handgunner/skeleton duel, solid painting with spot on imagery/atmosphere, a deserved win.
Conrad got a couple of pins, from 2 very nice entries, he is now 15 pins from 15 entries! It has to only be a matter of time before he finally gets a demon.

A necron army won armies on parade, we were stood in the queue with the painter and got to see the base, which was very nice; even then, not seeing any other entries, we thought it would be a contender. This was interesting, because everyone could vote if they wished, but you could only get to within about 5 foot of the entries at best, so definitely mostly about impact at distance...

In open, Steve Buddles corpse cart was great, but I disliked the base for the elf and I think the snowy graveyard suffered in the harsh cabinet vlight, it looks better in the pics. For me open was the most disapointing, it seems to be a category for the design studio now. I want to be blown away and I wasn't, both Martin and Mike have done better entries in the past.

Alan merret all but said that the sword winner got the sword for having 4 (I think) golds, my pick for sword was his demonette, but its been done before. I think his entries had a subtlety that was lost in the harsh light of the cabinet, be interested to see better pics.

Automaton: those painted pics on the (Heroquest) box were awesome! I looked at them as virtually an unattainable goal in painting, haha...
