Dunno what Tin Soldier's obsession with "No basing" is. Really puts me off when you can't display a figure nicely, especially when most Reaper figures are on those hideous, straight-from-1992, brocolli bases.

It is a very odd decision for no basing. again, like their previous comp for Dark Sword. The no basing makes it very uninteresting for me.

I would have considered this if I could base it - to me it's part of the creative process. I don't want to spend all that time on a figure that at the end of it - I will feel in incomplete. I really think you guys should reconsider Kath.

Yeah the basing rule is just weird, it's like you have to enter a WIP figure and finish it off after the comp :?

Just thinking, does that mean with Warlord figures (the slotta ones) we are supposed to enter them on blank bases?

I can kinda see where they're coming from (the mini is the important bit) but I too think it odd as I would never consider leaving a well painted mini unbased. Even the normal, solid based reaper ones I end up attaching to a slottabase and burying the solid base in GS.

Sent an email to Tins asking about the comp, here's the reply

"We received your mail about the ‘no basing’ policy for our painting comp.

For this competition, we want to keep the attention focused on the paintjob on the model, not at the base and items added to it.

Most of the Reaper models do have a textured base, however.

In the future, we are going to do more competitions, amongst which a conversion competition, in which participants can go all out on bases etc.

Regards,

Sven"

Ahh. Are we allowed to paint the base? Or leave it black? Or unpainted even. Such a strange rule.

I wonder if we can at least glue the figures on the brocolli base to a 25mm square base or something? I sense handling problems otherwise with certain figures.

Asked em about slotta based reaper minis, they said just have it on the base painted a flat colour. Considering I have some reapers with detailed bases like decking or stonework and others have those broccoli things it's just such a dumb rule. Ah well what can you do, apart from pick a mini that already has a nice molded on base.

Geez - why not just stick the tab in a lump of blu tac...
I wouldn't be at all comfortable painting a comp standard mini and basing it that way (at least permanently).
I guess a compromise would be to pin it to the competition base and glue from the underside so it's easy to get off later without damaging your paintwork.

I agree - of all the manufacturers they could have picked to have a painting competition with absolutely zero base work, they pick the company that has integrated molded bases!

Will need to find out if you can at least enter a miniature glued onto a plain plastic base - you know, remove the brocolli base and then attach it to a black unpainted GW plastic base or something when you enter it.

I think what they're doing is great. I have to agree in that I Think basing generally detracts from the actual model itself. This might be an unusual rule, because a lot of comps have nothing like it, but I think it's good :)

hey everyone, there is a big update about this competition. We were at Tin Soldier yesterday, and they told us to pass on the news that there has been a change to the competition: a new 'masterclass' category. Here is what is written on the flyer they handed out:

"MASTERCLASS CATEGORY

Rules:

- Very high quality paintwork will get your entry entered in this category automatically

- ANY model

- Base size MAXIMUM 5 x 5 cm

- No conversions

Prizes:

- First Prize Masterclass: T'Raukzul (Dragon)

- Prize in this category becomes active after 10 entries"

Ok, so the way it works is that if they think the painting is good enough, they will automatically put your model into masterclass category. Plus, you are allowed BASES in the masterclass, huzzah! If the mini has a base it will also automatically be entered in masterclass, no matter what.

They also told me to stress that all minis entering the comp MUST have been bought at Tins Soldier Sydney within the last 3 months - they check receipts and stuff on their computer, so when you buy the mini, you need to tell them that it is for the competition so they can mark it down.

If people from out of Sydney want to enter, you can contact one of us Sydney painters, and we can buy them and mail them out. Then you can mail the finished entries back, and we will enter it in the comp for you.
