OK a very productive meeting we had yesterday at Mind Games, and I even resisted the urge to buy stuff  .
After much discussion regarding the display cases I've found the card I was on about.....

The Secondhand Shopfitting Co
89 Langridge Street
Collingwood

I'll try to get in there soon to see what they've got.

Also do we want to go with the flyer to see what sort of interest we can generate for a painting comp? Maybe just a small questionaire asking what people would like to see, get involved in, prizes, categories, etc.
Thoughts?

-Tony

Thanks for the address, I'll try and get in for a look.

I like the idea of getting some market research done about a competition. A short questionnaire would work well. I am interested if people prefer the 1,2,3 prize winners or a Ravage style system. I'm tending towards the Ravage model myself - though judging would be more intesive in this format.

Also, and I think it was Peter mentioned this yesterday, what about including categories for the modelling aspect, not just painted stuff?

A quick list of categories that I fancy would be:

Sci-Fi Small model
Sci-Fi Large Model
Sci-Fi Squad

Fantasy small Model
Fantasy large model
Fantasy Unit

Fantasy or Sci-Fi Diorama

Historical Single model (up to 54mm)
Historical Single Model (over 54mm)
Historical Squad or Unit (any scale)
Historical Vehicle
Historical Diorama

The comp would be 'any manufacturer' and squads need not conform to rulesets but must be a cohesive group (not even models from the same manufacturer as long as the look like they belong together).

That's my quick 5 min category list

Well... 5 min and an evening of on-and-off pondering
Prize-wise we could have overall winners (gold, silver & bronze) in each category and maybe a best of each manufacturer to give more excitement. The manufactuers may be more inclined to support a comp where their models are getting prizes.
As far as a trophy goes I'd be happy to sculpt something and I'm sure Nic would give us a good rate on casting.

All sounds really good so far. :D
We will obviously have to ponder a name for all of this too, unless, if Little Wars takes off, Nic & co would be happy to incoporate it into proceedings.
Maybe something like the Little Wars Paintbrush awards (OK not that really  ) or something along those lines.

Hi fellas,

Don't often post stuff but I've following this one with interest. I feel the competition is a great idea but I would like to suggest that you limit the number of categories. If there is definately going to be a large number of entrants, then a large number of categories is OK. Otherwise some categories may only have one or two entrants.
That said, I realy like the idea of having sci-fi, fantasy and historical sections. Should appeal to all types that way.

Scott.

Hey Scott nice to hear from you mate :D
What we'll probably do is list all the categories on the questionaire and see what sort of feedback we get from the people that attend Little Wars. Then we can refine the list before we actually announce a start date for the first comp. If we get no interest for some categories then we probably won't include them.

Good point Scott. Maybe we could consider collapsing the Fantasy & Sci-fi into one category sor you basically end up with a 'real' & 'non-real' section.
I guess we'd need feedback from historical modellers on what categories they'd like to see - our perspective on their hobby is likely to be innacurate :D

I think the category limit is the way to go initially. Nothing destroys a painting comp like a category with a single entry.

It would work well I think as, by and large, the size of the Fantasy & sci-fi models are comparable. We could also potentially collapse the historicals down a bit. I guess it's a matter of judging criteria then so that a 40mm cowboy is judged on technical merits against a 70mm Samurai which may be a more spectacular model.

Between one thing & another last week I completely forgot to check-back for the meeting time, so I completely missed-out. My apologies, Tony... :(

Re - Categories: Keeping these to a limit is definitely the safest approach ("K.I.S.S" principle should be in full play). However, I really would suggest not merging Sci-Fi & Fantasy into one category - you'll likely have a greater number of entries by keeping them separate. People identify with genres over & above sizes, & entrants will have a greater sense of being able to feel they are competing like-against-like. Additionally, many painters will choose to enter both fantasy and sci-fi if both are made available, rather than entering a single fantasy or sci-fi figure if they are simply lumped together. The squads/units categories would be best left for a later date; nice, simple, single-figure categories would be a great way to start.
