hi guys, here's a 28mm mini I sculpted earlier this month. It's a private commission.

The client sent me the piece of artwork shown below, and asked for a 28mm mini based closely on it. I think he said that his brother made the artwork for a competition or something like that, so it's got sentimental value for him. He also wanted it to be cast - he's making a few casts for himself. And he wanted it in 1 piece, and with the integral base as shown.

As soon as I heard it needed to be cast in one piece, I knew the hands/fingers were going to be tricky! The long fingernails as pictured in the artwork, epecially in that curved over position, would be a nightmare to cast, and I doubt it would work...from my small knowledge of moulding/casting, anyway. So I had to take a few liberties with the shape and position of the hands - hopefully it will cast fine this way, although I think even this is pushing it.

Anyway, yeah - sculpted in sculpey firm (the grey robes), with milliput-greenstuff mix for most other bits.

As a side note: Steve told me that he's meant to have a little scroll stuck to his forehead, trailing down over his face! The scroll is a spell that means the sorcerer can control him - without the scroll the hopping ghost does his own thing. According to Steve, anyway! hehe ;)

Seb, this is freaking awesome! The proper romanization of its name is really Jiang Shi, but who cares? Steve's right, too - he needs the control parchment stuck on his forehead, otherwise he'll go on a rampage.

Since you've got this sculpt already, you might as well extend it to encompass the Black and White Ghost. Can't remember what their formal names are, but they're emissaries of Chinese hell - you got the body of the Jiang Shi, so that's sorted, and Black and White just wear dunce caps (literally!) and have tongues that roll to the ground. And like their names say, one's always dressed in white, the other in black.

This is awesome, and as Kelvin said already, you have the basis to do a few variants, with the tongues and caps, some with parchments, etc.

Looks like the perfect thing for your range of Chinese characters to fight!

Do you have further reproduction rights or to do derivative works? If not, I think you should definitely do your own version for your range!

And just to cap things off and make it perfect, have a mad Chinese Taoist priest controlling the Jiang Shi, complete with flaming altar and wooden jian (Chinese straightsword) :)!

Yeah it could be cool to do something similar for Guild of Harmony! And with the priest/sorcerer to control him, as gohkm suggests, hehe...it'd be fun :) But no I have no rights whatsoever with this one, now the sculpting has ended...it's just a straight commission job, and I've been paid, so any rights I have end there. But I can't see that it would stop me doing something similar - it's a Chinese mythological figure, so it should be open to anyone.

Thanks for the nice comments guys, as always!

Excellent! If you made an alternative version for your shop I would be all over it - especially if his legs are tied together (as legend dictates I think?)!

It looks like it hops due to rigor mortis. I just googled it and found an FAQ: http://www.resort.com/~banshee/Misc/hopping_ghost.html
Judging from how you can defend yourself from them, it's easier to fight off zombies...

Great work Seb, it looks like you are really becoming the go to guy for Chinese themed models. The end product looks pretty close to the original artwork.

The things you've said that are not so good about it is not true. We all know that it is near to impossible to copy perfectly any picture to sculpture. You mini is really nice. Maybe just a little add of colors to make it more alive will make it great.

A cool alternate figure would be one actually hopping- as in one foot on the ground. One for the "Hell City" boxset perhaps?

Great stuff

threadomancy much?

they don't hop in the skipping sense, unless they died in a hopping pose. They have poth feet together because they died and stayed in that position, and therefore cannot move out of it. Like turelio said, rigor mortis.

I'd imagine it'd be a bit flimsy if it was on one foot, too...

I'll accept that.
