Not sure if anyone's been having issues doing blending with the new Citadel paint range, but Zaphod on CMON has found something that works for him.

I've been having lots of difficulty re-setting up my paint station here in Singapore, so I haven't messed around with painting for almost a month now. So I cannot comment on this.

Hope that someone finds this useful.

Pretty! I'll give that a go at some point. I tried them out a bit more last weekene, and the new layers seemed to work pretty well for me, but any improvement is a good thing.

It's just a surface tension thing. I have had no issues with the new GW paints and glazing using only water. But if you do its most likely going to be a surface tension thing, where water is not enough alone to cause the paint the spread more evenly. What I noticed is that the new paint is more elastic in some situations. The solution. Clear Windex.

the X20 thinner is good, but a little windex will sufficently do the same thing for a fraction of the cost and is easily found at a supermarket. I've tried it and it did make the paint flow more free from the brush then with just water. I didn't really need to with the new GW paint though as i found the water did a good enough job.

I would suggest adding a little windex to the thinning when you are having issues like what is described in that link.

Hey everyone down under!

I was surprised to find my post all the way in Australia! The only two guys I know from the painting scene so far are Weisern and Seb :D (Ello!)

Yes, its surface tension. But there is one more factor: Drying time. Because of the new medium, the new Citadel Colors dry very slowly. I have never used Windex (we dont have it in Germany, I guess here it is called "Sidolin"), and I am sure that like the thinner it will bring down the drying time.

Here in Germany a lot of good painters basically said "No" to the new GW colors because of the problems with blendings (diluted, not wet). I was about to throw my GW paints (full set :() out of the window, too. But when I finally figured out how to work them I felt I wanna share that. Proves, I was not the only one with these issues.

Anyways, I am happy to find all of this on my favorite Aussie board :D (it IS the only one I know, however)...

Stay hoopy!

I did't think about the drying time of the new paints. I guess it didnt really effect my painting enough to notice, as I use feathering to initiate my blending I think that's why I haven't noticed the difference in drying time between the series of paints.

What I did notice is that the new GW paint felt really smooth on the brush (maybe due to the new medium), which I liked quite a bit.

I guess its the old addage 'horses for courses' and the new paints not suiting some painters style. Windex is just a simple glass cleaner that I feel does make the paint dry faster and breaks the surface tension of the paint.

Interesting, thanks. :)

I must say that i've not been at all impressed with the layers. The bases handle fine for me at my 'typical' preferred consistency, but the layers have so much medium-pigment ratio that by the time I get them handling nicely they might as well be glazes. Due to the opacity and pigment content I find they're next to useless for basecoating and dry techniques too of course, and painting 'thick' feels like all i'm doing is building up a nice coat of medium. :P

I only really like the bases now tbh. They're great as multi-purpose paints, but that means (for me at least) GW now only have a couple of dozen worthwhile products in their range.

From the little experience I have had, I can only summarise that the new GW range is "for Gamers".

Layers are exactly that. For layring so that something is "painted to Tabletop" for gaming.

Personally, if paints require this much dicking around beyond thinning with water, there are other ranges out there which cost half the price and require half the effort.
