REAPER MINIATURES™
SUMMER 2007 PAINTING CONTEST INFORMATION!

CATEGORIES
  • REAPER SINGLE MINIATURE - SMALL
  • REAPER SINGLE MINIATURE - LARGE
  • BEST REAPER MINIATURES DIORAMA/BATTLESCENE/WARLORD UNIT
  • BEST IN SHOW

Category Breakdown

  • REAPER SINGLE MINIATURE – SMALL
This includes Reaper miniatures whose normal base size is 1.25" or smaller (like a “slottabase”, or equivalent). Display bases and Scenic bases are allowed. This category is open to models of the appropriate size from either the Dark Heaven Legends line (including miniatures from Dark Heaven Army Packs, Boxed Sets, or Special Edition), or Warlord line. The Primary Model in the entry must be from one of these lines.
(*For “primary model”, and other terms with which you may not be familiar, simply refer to “Questions, Answers, and Definitions”, shown below!*)

  • REAPER SINGLE MINIATURE – LARGE
This includes Dark Heaven miniatures whose normal base size is larger than 1.25", such as monsters, dragons, or mounted models. Display bases and Scenic bases are allowed. This category is also open to models of the appropriate size from either the Dark Heaven Legends line (including large miniatures from Boxed Sets or Special Edition), the Warlord line, or Dana Murphy from CAV.

  • BEST REAPER MINIATURES DIORAMA/BATTLESCENE/WARLORD UNIT
This category is comprised of entries which are basically miniatures mounted on a scenic display base which either tell a story (as in a battle or duel, or a quiet vignette) or simply show-off the miniature in an appropriately modeled setting. This category is open to models of the appropriate size from either the Dark Heaven Legends line (including miniatures from Dark Heaven Army Packs, Boxed Sets, or Special Edition), the Warlord line, or Dana Murphy from CAV. The Primary Model in the entry must be from one of these lines.

A Warlord Unit includes any game-legal “troop” (ie: unit) of models from the Warlord army lists, found in the Warlord rulebook. Single-model units (ie: lone elites, monsters or “solos”) are not permitted. All models must be mounted on bases which correspond to the model's legal gaming base size. Proxies are permitted as long as they are Reaper miniatures. For the purposes of this contest, a maximum number of six (6) models will be permitted per troop.

  • BEST IN SHOW
This category is comprised of the prize winners of all other categories. The winner of Best In Show is to be chosen by the judges.

Questions, Answers, and Definitions!

*If you have a question which you can’t see answered here, a concept you’re unsure how to present, or have any other query, this thread will be open throughout the duration of the contest for discussion and feedback.

1. What Can I Base My Miniature On?

For the purposes of this competition, you can base your miniature on whatever suitable material, commercially-produced base, or integral-base (ie: a base which is cast as part of the miniature, as with most Dark Heaven figures) you can find or create. The only stipulations are:
  • The miniature, along with any other object or substance included, must be securely attached to the base.

  • The base for any entry, in any category, must not be any larger than 6” x 6” x 6”. In the case of a few extremely large models (ie: the very largest-size dragons), exceptions will be made.

In basic terms: Mount your miniature on whatever you like, exercise your common-sense, and as long as you adhere to these two basic requirements you’ll be fine!

2. How Do I Know How Big The “Normal Base” Is?

"Normal base size" has been used in the Category Outline to describe size of the base size normally packaged with or cast as part of the model. The measurements given refer to the usual dimensions of the base at its widest point. A fair amount of leeway will be given on this, as some small figures are posed with legs spread wide, etc., and may occupy an oddly-shaped or elongated base, whereas some large figures may be posed with their feet close together and occupy only a small ground-space. In such cases, it will be the relative size of the miniature, the spirit of the rule, and common-sense, which will decide the outcome.

3. What’s A Display Or Scenic Base?

A Display base, for purposes of this competition, is a pedestal, plaque, or similar item upon which the model sits but which is not itself landscaped or modeled (as with a trophy base, for example). A Scenic base, for purposes of this competition, is a base larger than that which the model normally occupies (eg: compact disc) which has been landscaped/sculpted/etc.

4. I’ve Based My Miniature On A Scenic Base. Does That Mean It Has To Go In The Diorama/Battlescene Category?

No. Scenic bases are allowed as described in the other miniature categories, so you can enter it in those if you wish. If you’ve really gone to town on your base, if it's quite large compared to the size of the model, or if you’ve really set out to “tell a story” in the way you’ve based your figure (for example, two characters facing off in a duel, robbers looting a graveyard, or a vampiress rising from her crypt) then Diorama/Battlescene is the category for you!

5. Primary Model? What’s That?

The primary model is defined as the focus of the entry. Small familiars or models incorporated into the basing (dead bodies, tombstones, masonry fragments) count as secondary models, and so may be used in single miniature entries. However, a slave girl or a knight just sagging to his knees with the primary model's sword in his chest would not be considered secondary models, as they are integral to the story being told by the entry. Single miniatures categories may only contain one primary model. As always, decisions of the judges are final.

6. How Do I Know What Goes In A Warlord Unit?

This is a new category, so we’ll take a moment to walk you through it!

A Warlord unit, called a “troop”, is the basic building block of a fighting force for Reaper’s fast-paced tabletop skirmish game called Warlord. For the purposes of this competition, a Warlord troop comprises a leader model and some soldiers, and perhaps an elite model or two, up to a maximum of six (6) models. Even if you don’t know how to play Warlord, you can still make a Warlord unit (in fact, you can play the game with as few as three models!). It’s easy!

Just look in the Warlord rulebook at the various factions such as Elves, Crusaders, Overlords, and so-on, pick a leader model you like and look at what it says in his data under “Troop”. This will have a minimum and maximum number of models allowed in the troop, and also how many elite models may join it, written as min-max/elite.

For example, say you picked Dwarven King Thorgram Grimsteel as your leader. Under “Troop” in his data, it reads “3-12/2”. This means the minimum number of models in the troop, including the King himself, is “3”, and the maximum “12” (although due to limited display space at the store, we’re keeping the maximum at 6 for the contest!), including up to “2” elite models. So potentially, you could enter a unit comprising simply the King and two Dwarven Warriors. This would be your minimum, and the unit would be “game-legal”. Or, if you were to go further, you could enter King Thorgram, four Dwarven Warriors, and Dwarven Hero Durgam Deepmug as your unit, and you’d have a tough little Warlord force ready to battle across the games table! You can use “proxy” models (that is, models which might not actually be the specific miniature shown in rulebook pictures, but which look really cool and you’d like to use instead!) in your Warlord unit. Ordinarily, for Warlord games we don’t mind whether they’re Reaper miniatures or not, but this painting contest is Reaper-only.

If you don’t have access to the Warlord rulebook, don’t worry! You can view Warlord data cards at the Reapergames website at http://warlordhq.reapergames.com/. Simply log-on, and go to “Data Cards” under “Help” on the toolbar at the left hand side of the page, and you’ll find what you’re looking for. Or, simply ask the friendly staff at Mind Games for assistance!

7. When Can I Enter?

Models may be submitted to staff at the Mind Games Melbourne (Swanston St.) store starting Fridau, November 16th, 2007. The deadline for submissions is 4pm on Saturday, December 16th, 2007. Painters must submit all entries in person. The painter need not be present to win, or for judging to occur.

8. Who Decides The Winners?

All judges will be selected at the discretion of the event organizer, and may include or be limited to himself. Models will be available for pickup after all prizes have been awarded. First, Second, and Third Prizes will be awarded for all categories. Winners may have their names posted on the WargamerAU forums, together with pictures of their entries.

CONTEST RULES

1. By submitting an entry you agree to abide by the rules of the contest.

2. Judges’ Decisions Are Final. No Correspondence Will Be Entered Into. This includes on-the-spot arguments with, and attacks either verbal or physical upon, the Judges and/or event organiser. Failure by a contestant, or an agent/proxy thereof, to observe this rule will result in disqualification and any prizes awarded to the contestant will be stripped.

3. Only Reaper Miniatures may be entered. One entry is permitted per entrant per category.

4. Painters must personally submit all entries. All entry forms for submissions must be signed by the painter.

5. Entrants may only enter models painted by them personally. Discovery, or reasonable suspicion, by the Judges that a model was not painted by the person who entered it will result in the entry being disqualified, or at the very least, excluded from consideration for the purposes of determining prize-winners.

6. Models which have appeared previously online, in publications, or in other competitions are allowed at the judges’ discretion. Miniatures entered in up to two (2) previous Reaper Miniatures Painting Contests are not permitted. Models which have previously been awarded prizes in any Reaper Miniatures Painting Contest initiated by this event organiser cannot be re-entered.

7. In the case of confusion regarding which category a model might belong in, all decisions of the judges are final. If you are unsure which category to enter with your model, please feel free to ask the event organizer at the time you submit your entry.

8. In the case of a scenic base for a single miniature which features another model, the general guideline is that a small familiar or model which is part of the basing (a pillar, a tree, a dead body, a broken shield, etc.) will not interfere with the model's Single Miniature status, at the discretion of the judges. All decisions made by the judges are final in this matter.

9. Have fun!! That’s the whole point of the exercise, and this hobby is a hoot, after all! Even though we hope that we'll get so many entries that the judges will take one look and cry, primarily Mind Games and Reaper want everyone to take advantage of the opportunity to walk away with prizes and to have fun competing against their friends and arch-nemeses. For that, we need entries. What are you waiting for? Happy painting!

Good to hear. I have not gotten all the information down in the store yet, but I will have everything there by next week so entry forms will be available.

Hopefully we will have a good turn out this year. This is the first one I have done (Tommy has done them in the past) and Tommy will be helping me with the judging so that it is very fairly done.

I am working on getting the prizes for this competition and we should have some nice ones for the winners.

He has been really focused on his school work and hence why he is not running this competition. I will say hi for you when I see him next.

Hey guys!

Just a little bump and a reminder that there is a little bit more than a week left in the competition!

Get your models painted up and into Mindgames and see if you can get a prize! The awards have arrived at my house and trust me, they look sweet!

I am really glad I posted my reminder then Gonzo!

I totally know the feeling about painting comps. I was kind of like that with the GD this year and my failure to get beyond regionals shows it.

Good luck with your painting guys!
