Carnival badge: The Physician
- Time period:15th Century
- Origin: England
- Materials: Pewter
- Product Dimensions:3.3cm width x 4.5cm height
A parody of the early medical profession. The hospitals were run by the monks so the early physician is shown as a monkey, wearing a monks cowl. He urinates into a pestle and mortar, part of his method of diagnosis. The fish may represent the church.
Badge making did not only serve a religious market. It occupied a position in all aspects of life as for example, political and military to show allegiance, celebrate amorous intent, and indicate sporting interests, often with a satirical flavour.
