Inlaid Chaffer Knife - SOLD

This one-off reproduction was hand crafted by Adam McKay in Australia. The tool steel blade is decorated with inserted brass pins between two lines engraved on one face of the blade. These are not only beautiful, but also reduce weight in the blade without sacrificing rigidity. The scale tang is mounted with solid brass bolsters for ideal balance, and inlaid with plates of luxurious Queen Ebony timber.

The accompanying vegetable tan leather sheath has been molded directly to the knife, hand stitched and decorated with foliate tooling, and finished with a beeswax polish for sheen and durability. The decoration is based on examples in the Museum of London.

The form of this knife is from an example in the Museum of London, catalogued as 'knife 36', from the mid thirteenth century. The inlay is a style popular in the thirteenth century, but the general form of clipped point 'chaffer' carving/serving knife endured into the fifteenth century.

Chaffers were tools of the panter, who cut and distributed bread and trenchers at a noble banquet table. No common servant, the panter was of noble lineage themselves and fulfilled an esteemed role at the dining table which was as ceremonial and theatrical as it was practical.

This knife is of high carbon tool steel and will give excellent and lifelong service as a chef's knife or carving knife, in addition to being the pride of any noble panter.
