The ultimate luxury accessory - a hand embroidered silk cushion cover.

Potted history;

Cushions were an essential part of the medieval household. Soft upholstery attached directly to furniture such as chairs was uncommon; instead cushions were used to enhance the beauty as well as soften the furniture for comfort, and accord a mark of status.

These luxurious hand stitched silk cushions are similar to those seen in a variety of household depictions from the 12th century onwards. In the early 15th century, Ruy Gonzáles de Clavijo, the Castilian ambassador to the court of Timur (Tamerlane), wrote detailed descriptions of the hand stitched embroideries that were commonly exported to the Western world. These are the forerunners of the Suzani textile that are still made by tribes in central Asian countries such as Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

The popular design motifs, then as now, include, sun and moon disks, flowers and plants such as leaves, tulips, carnations, vines and irises, fruits - particularly pomegranates and occasionally fish and birds. These particular Suzani textile cushion covers are made from a silk base with hand embroidered silk motifs using a combination of chain, satin and buttonhole stitches. The backing is cotton and the cover closes with a modern zipper.
