The crowned heart was a popular symbol. This example is surrounded by the depiction of a pearl border, as pearls represented purity. The diagonal sash has the inscription "Herte be trewe".
Badge making did not only serve a religious market. It occupied a position in all aspects of life as for example, political and military to show allegiance, celebrate amorous intent, and indicate sporting interests, often with a satirical flavour.
