This volume of the Compleat Anachronist is a starting point for hobbyists and reenactor interested in the basic skills used to make common turnshoes. The techniques described in this text are how I taught myself to make turnshoes using readily available tools, materials, and information, adapted from sewing, leatherworking and shoe manufacturing texts. The techniques presented her have been tested and refined to help first time shoemakers successfully make a pair of turnshoes that will look good, and complement most medieval clothing,. while these shoes are suitable for reenactors, they are not true reproduction of archeological specimens. The shoe styles and construction are taken from 'Shoes and Patterns' and 'Stepping through time' on documented medieval shoe finds. Shoe details as they are presented represent the medieval period from around the seventh through the sixteenth centuries.
