The cottage and farmhouse garden was primarily the housewifes domain and at this level of society wives were poor and largely illiterate. Very little has therefore been written directly for the small garden although there is a considerable body of work on the country house gardens often managed by well educated men such as John Tradescant or overseen by educated Gentlewomen.
In this book largely fragmentary sources have been used to piece together the garden plants cultivated based around the one comprehensive list in Thomas Tussers 500 points of Good Husbandry, with additional information from The Country Huswifes Garden and probates, herbals etc. Cultivation methods have then been based around generally more affluent gardens while attempting to screen out the more expensive, exotic and experimental techniques.
